Hotel Review: Fairmont El San Juan Hotel

Reviewed by KATHLEEN SQUIRES

first impressions?

The Fairmont El San Juan Hotel boasts one of the island's most stunning lobbies, featuring a glistening oval chandelier—the third largest of its kind in the world—illuminating the space. It’s a striking contrast to the rich mahogany and polished marble in one of the hotel's five bars just below. But don’t get too comfortable—because with the beach and four inviting pools just outside, you’ll want to soak up every moment!

So…what's the story?

First opened in 1958, this iconic hotel was the epicenter of entertainment on the island, with a nightclub that attracted legends like Frank Sinatra and Liza Minnelli. Over the years, it’s kept that polished, dress-to-impress vibe. Now part of Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, the hotel tapped designer Jeffrey Beers for a $65 million renovation under the Hilton banner, unveiled in December 2018. The result? A fresh, modern take on the common spaces, restaurants, and bars, all while keeping its rich history and timeless elegance intact.

How are the rooms? What are the different options?

Rooms in the Grand Tower come with ocean, pool, or city views and plenty of space to kick back in a proper sitting area. The Villas are poolside, complete with outdoor spaces, large bathrooms, and complimentary breakfast. For those craving even more, the suites offer expanded living areas, with the top-tier options pulling out all the stops—a baby grand piano, private whirlpool, terraces, and more.

Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is part of the 18 percent resort fee.

Any good food on-site?

With eight restaurants on-site, you’re spoiled for options. Poolside, there’s Caña by Juliana González, dishing out local favorites like pigeon pea stew and garlicky prawns with yucca mofongo. Aquarelle offers al fresco dining, while Meat Market, a popular Miami steakhouse, brings the sizzle. You’ll also find an Italian spot and a laid-back bistro. For drinks, the Chandelier Bar sets the tone, but there’s also a rum bar, wine bar, cabaret bar, and a café dedicated to local coffee. Plus, with three poolside and beachside bars—including one that's swim-up—you’re never far from your next cocktail.

Who will stay here?

Beach-lovers flock here for their sun fix.

What else is nearby?

You can't beat the location—you're just 10 minutes from baggage claim to beach bliss. Nestled in Isla Verde, the hotel is also a quick taxi ride from Piñones, where foodies go on a deep-fried adventure, hopping from kiosk to kiosk. Need a change of scenery? Vivo Beach Club is just down the road with another gorgeous stretch of sand. And if you love pairing your surf with some suds, Ocean Lab Brewing Co., one of the island’s only craft breweries, is right there waiting for you.

Anything else we should be sure to check out while staying here?

Fairmont El San Juan is bringing casino chic back to the island with its revamped casino—15,000 square feet of gaming fun, thanks to a partnership with Foxwoods. The hotel keeps the nightlife vibes alive with Chico Cabaret, a speakeasy with live entertainment, and Club Brava, a bi-level dance club boasting state-of-the-art sound and lighting. The Well & Being Spa offers a fitness center with a rooftop for outdoor classes, from vertical wall yoga to water-based workouts and indoor cycling. Poolside, you can kick back in lounges, daybeds, or luxury cabanas across the four pools. And don’t miss out on the endless water sports, from kayaking to parasailing. Plus, there's a tennis center right on the property.

Bottom line: Worth it?

It delivers three essential Bs: beach, bars, and by-the-airport.
